Multi-Timeframe Pine Script: Using request.security Without Repainting
Pulling higher-timeframe data into your script is powerful — and the number one source of repainting bugs. Here's how to do MTF correctly in Pine Script v6.
Why MTF repaints
Multi-timeframe (MTF) analysis means pulling data from a higher timeframe into your current chart — like checking the daily trend while trading the 1-hour. The function for this is request.security(). Used carelessly, it shows your script data from the future, which makes backtests look amazing and live trading fail.
Two settings prevent this: lookahead=barmerge.lookahead_off, and referencing the higher-timeframe series with [1] so you only use the last fully-closed bar.
The non-repainting pattern
By requesting close[1] (the previous daily close) with lookahead_off, the value only updates when the daily bar actually closes. Your intraday entries now react to confirmed higher-timeframe data — exactly what they'd see live.

Tip
If you remove the [1], your script can flicker as the daily bar forms. Always use [1] on the HTF expression for signals you'll trade.
Common MTF uses
- Trade only in the direction of the higher-timeframe trend
- Show a multi-timeframe RSI or MACD dashboard in a table
- Confirm an entry when 1H and 4H agree
- Plot daily pivots on an intraday chart
