7 Trading Strategy Mistakes That Ruin Your Backtest (And How to Fix Them in 2026)

Great backtest, terrible live results
The most dangerous strategy is one with a beautiful backtest and a hidden flaw. These seven mistakes make historical results look far better than reality — and every one of them is preventable in Pine Script v6.
The seven mistakes
- 1. Repainting — signals that appear then vanish; fix with barstate.isconfirmed
- 2. Lookahead bias — using future data via request.security without lookahead_off and [1]
- 3. Zero costs — no commission or slippage; set them realistically in strategy()
- 4. Curve-fitting — parameters tuned to one period; validate out-of-sample
- 5. Too few trades — under ~30 trades the result is statistical noise
- 6. Stop drift — recalculating stops every bar; store them in var float at entry
- 7. Survivorship/one-symbol bias — works on one chart only; test across several
How to validate honestly
Set realistic costs, gate entries on bar close, use lookahead_off, keep parameters few and standard, and always test on a date range and symbols the strategy wasn't tuned on. If it survives all that, you have something worth trading.
Tip
A strategy that only works with zero commission, or collapses when you change one parameter slightly, is not a strategy — it's a curve-fit artifact.
Build clean strategies from the start
Most of these mistakes are structural, and a specialist AI avoids them by default — confirmed entries, lookahead_off, var-float stops, realistic cost settings. Generate clean code, then focus your energy on finding a real edge instead of fixing avoidable backtest bugs.
